February 15th was the International Childhood Cancer Day which highlights the need for united global actions to address the growing challenge posed by this non-communicable disease.
There are much less children with cancer compared to general adult cancers and the number of lives saved is significantly higher; there is a high survival rates in industrialized countries reaching an average of 84% while the less-resourced areas of the world with no local or international support are affected greater.
“The chance for a cure, the chance to live, should not be an accident of geography. There is nothing scarier than realizing that your child has cancer. However, there is nothing more tragic than knowing that treatment and cure does exist for your particular child’s cancer and with excellent outcomes, BUT… that it is not available for your child. Why? Because your child happens to live in the wrong hemisphere!”
An international response is needed to give every child the best chance of surviving cancer free – such as education or raising awareness, improving access, offering the best possible treatment, palliative care and support for children with cancer and their families. While adult’s cancers are often linked to life style and environment risk factors, it can be difficult to detect cancer in children. Moreover, the symptoms of childhood cancer are often similar to those of typical childhood illnesses, such as the common cold, and they vary between children.
