Van Vu - Registered Social Worker & Psychotherapist



Van graduated from McMaster University in 1994 with an Honours BA in Psychology. Following 10 years of public service working as a Probation/Parole Officer, Van returned to school as a mature student and obtained her Master in Social Work (MSW) degree from Wilfrid Laurier University (2007). She is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy, and the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation.

Her extensive post-graduate training include certification in trauma and addiction treatment. She also completed training and have practice experience utilizing Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, Solution Focused and Narrative Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, and Sex Therapy.

Whether this is your first time or your return to therapy, Van offers a flexible therapeutic approach that is client-centered and collaborative. She takes a compassionate and thoughtful approach to ensure that she understands your concerns and your hopes for therapy. Van’s therapeutic style is well-paced, warm, and caring. She uses a dynamic combination of evidence-based treatment approaches and incorporates practical and experiential treatment activities to support positive treatment outcomes.

Van’s practice interests include treatment of emotional disorders, trauma and addiction, grief and loss, and supporting families experiencing high conflict separation/divorce. In addition, Van supports couples by providing them with the tools to improve communication, change negative interaction patterns, repair past hurts, and revitalize emotional and physical intimacy.

Her appreciation for continuous learning has steered her towards many professional development and teaching opportunities. Providing clinical training and consultation to emerging and practicing therapists is a part of the work that she enjoys. Van also designs and delivers curriculum at McMaster’s Professional Addiction Program, acting as an instructor here and at other post-secondary institutions for over a decade.

On a personal note, Van has lived and worked in the Hamilton/Burlington area for well over 30 years. Work/life balance for Van would involve lots of outdoor activities at the lake along with her partner of over 20 years and their two children. Friends would describe Van as an adventurous “foodie”!
