Learn about Back Pain
Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical attention or end up missing work. Statistics Canada revealed that 4 out of 5 adults will expereince at least one episode of back pain at some point in their lives, being most prevelant between the ages of 30 to 50. Often times the exact cause of the injury is unknown and can become very disabiling. Prevention is the first line of defence when it comes to minmizing the risk of sustaining a back injury.
Back Injuries - Symptoms:
- Achy or tense muslces
- Shooting or stabbing pain
- Pain with sneezing, coughing, or straining
- Pain worsens with bending, lifting, standing and walking
How Back Pain Can Affect You?
Back pain can significantly limit your ability to participate in daily activities and become a significant source of stress. Prolonged postures, repetitive movements, bending, lifting and carrying can all aggravate your symptoms and create additional dysfunction. Early intervention can help to minimize the impact of your symptoms and reduce your recovery time.
What Causes Lower Back Pain?
- Muscle or ligament strains could be associated to repetitive heavy lifting or sudden movements.
- Within our spine we have discs that act as cushions between the bones in our spine. In certain cases the disc can bulge or rupture and create low back pain or press on a nerve.
- As we get older the lumbar vertebrae can degenerate which means the space between the bones narrows. This can add stress to the joints in the back leading to pain and stiffness.
- Your spine's vertebrae can develop compression fractures if your bones become porous and brittle which is called osteoporosis.
How Our Chiropractors Can Help with Back Pain?
Our Chiropractors are highly skilled in treating back pain. Depending on the severity of the injury, our chiropractors will use various techniques and modalities to target the problem areas to reduce pain and promote healing.
Active Release or Spinal Adjustment are two popular therapies for back pain. Our chiropractors use a combination of hands on therapy, active rehabilitative techniques as well as modalities to aid with pain relief and recovery through both the acute and chronic stages.
Given the complex nature of back injuries, it is vital that you adhere to the treatment recommendations set out by the Chiropractor, typically starting with a higher frequency of treatment, followed by a reduction in frequency as pain decreases and your function increases. Each person is unique in their presentation and response to treatment, therefore treatment sessions will include a variety of techniques to help maximize your recovery.
Prevention
Back injury prevention is complex and ever lasting! Our backs are involved in nearly every aspect of our lives, which places them at higher risk for injury. Being pro-active and maintaing a healthy life is key, as well as managing and/or modifying your surrounding environments (work, home and leisure activities) to minimize the stress placed onto your back.
- Regular low-impact aerobic exercises
- Build muscle strength and increase flexibility
- Maintain a healthy weight

"I have been recommended to go to Pillars of Wellness because I suffered from a recent injury resulting from outdoor activities. The whole staff are very professional and very caring. Great Chiropractor! Very diligent and went above and beyond for me. Never charged me for the extra time she spent with me. She suggested to combine my treatment with her, doing Acupuncture which was done by a Naturopath. After few sessions, my pain have reduced considerably. I strongly recommend Pillars of Wellness. They are compassionate and worked collaboratively to help me getting better and faster. Thank you so much!" - Arthur Portmann
