What Is a Group Therapy?

Group therapy is a form of counselling where a small group of people and a mental health professional meet on a regular basis to discuss and explore problems with each other. Group therapy seeks to give people a safe and confidential environment where they can work out emotional concerns and other related issues based on the group topic.

What Can Group Therapy Treat?

Many groups are designed to target a specific problem, such as anxiety or depression, trauma, addictions, parenting, or chronic pain. Other groups can focus on improving social skills, helping people manage their anger, loneliness and low self-esteem.

What are the types of group therapy?

There are various types of group therapy to name a few:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Trauma/PTSD
  • Parenting
  • Relationships
  • Grief
  • Anger Management

What are benefits of group therapy?

Group therapy helps individuals to share their own experiences and emotions, as well as allows participants to learn how to express their concerns to others. Group therapy also allows participants to develop helpful listening and communication skills. An additional benefit to group support is the cost is often lower than what you might pay for individual therapy.

Is group therapy better than individual therapy?

Group therapy and individual therapy both have their own strengths and weaknesses. Being in a group fosters the development of communication and social skills and allows people to share their concerns with others who might be experiencing something similar in a safe and confidential manner.

How long should group therapy last?

Most groups are time-limited and usually last anywhere from 6-15 weeks in length. It is not unusual for people to re-enter in a new group once their first program is completed. Typically, a session can last between 1-2 hours, once per week..

What is the ideal size for a therapy group?

An optimal therapy group size is between eight to fifteen participants, with one or two therapists. The smaller and more intimate the group, the easier it is to open up and share your own feelings.

Is group therapy covered by insurance?

Insurance coverage is similar for both group and individual therapy. In addition, most insurance companies cover group therapy much the same as individual therapy. We can also assist you in submitting your claim at no charge.

CBT Anxiety Group Program

Are you interested in learning practical skills to manage your anxiety?

CBT for anxiety is a supportive, skill-building, psycho-educational group, it is not a support group. The group provides coping strategies and skills, along with exercises to foster progress and lessen symptoms of anxiety. Experts agree that the most effective form of treatment for anxiety disorders is cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT).

This group focuses on the following:

  • Learn skills to decrease your worry and anxiety through the use of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
  • Identify and understand symptoms and nature of anxiety
  • Identify and change anxious patterns and habits using neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to change and grow to form new pathways and make new connections)
  • Personal goal setting
  • Weekly at-home practice exercises
