What is Trauma?

Every individual has a different eye for the experiences in their life. Generally, trauma is a psychological condition or an emotional state in response to anything stressful, disturbing or threatening to a person. Trauma can be due to anything. It can be due to a car accident, losing a loved one, violence, illness, going through a separation/divorce. People can get into this state after other tragedies like torture, physical violence or rape.

The conditions that can lead a person to a trauma are endless. There are people who are that strong that even after facing so much in life, they are ready to face life with open arms while some are too vulnerable to experiences that they can get trapped in them.

Types of Trauma:

People always see things in regard to their past experiences. Past experiences have a great hand in the development of trauma. Some individuals also get trapped in trauma just because they experienced something terrifying for the first time. These are the people who don’t foresee the coming tragedy or trouble. Hence, they land into a traumatic state. For example, some people set into trauma because of the death or loss of a loved one.

The unexpected knock of life at one’s doorsteps can shake them to the core and they can easily be one of the victims of trauma. Psychologists have divide trauma into further types to make it easy to understand. Among the major types are Post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD), complex trauma and developmental trauma disorder.

  • POST- TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER:

Persons develop this type of trauma when they experience serious, scary or dangerous event/moment. People usually recover from initial symptoms but serious conditions can ask for a psychologist’s help. People who suffer from this PSTD have uncomfortable thoughts, flashbacks, anxiety or nightmares.

It is a type of trauma that forms in the children especially in the first three years of the child’s life. It can either be a result of neglect, abuse or abandoning. The child develops it and grows with it. It is not necessary that the person inflicts it upon the child intentionally. It can be due to unawareness or lack of knowledge of a child’s emotional state. Such people are unaware of a child’s needs. Children who suffer from this disorder have attachment issues when they grow up.

What are the symptoms of Trauma?

It is something that can be cured with the help of a therapy. Psychologists and therapists know what the person might be going through and what their needs are. They plan the therapy sessions accordingly.

As there are different types of traumas, the therapies are also different in nature. There are various therapies and therapists adopt different ways to confront and heal the sufferer. The most common of all trauma therapies are:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps the sufferer to know more about their thoughts or cognitions related to their trauma. It is just like educating them and giving them the strength to cope up with their emotions
  • Exposure therapy is another therapy that is used to expose the source of a person’s anxiety just to help them and not to cause any problem
  • Talk therapy also known as psychodynamic psychotherapy is a verbal communication. It helps to relieve the sufferer from the ongoing emotional pain and to help him/her gather their strength to cope up

A psychologist’s or a therapist’s ability to understand and grasp the ongoing emotional tension in the sufferer is imperative but the willingness to get better from the sufferer’s side is equally important.
