TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder) Treatment Services in Burlington
Pillars of Wellness, located in Burlington, Aldershot, specializes in treating injuries and disorders of the skeletal system and associated muscles, such as temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ).
What is TMJ?
This term is used to describe dysfunction of the jaw muscle and bones.
Our team of practitioners will assess and evaluate your pain, discomfort, and other symptoms before creating a custom treatment plan to help you safely recover. Fortunately, TMJ is mostly temporary and often just require simple physiotherapy for treatment.
Our physiotherapists can treat this condition using different methods such as jaw exercises and/or cognitive behavioral therapy. It does not often require surgery. In fact, it is preferable that the disorder is cured without any irreversible treatments.
Physiotherapy and alternative therapy have also proven to be successful treatments for these disorders, the latter of which we also offer at Pillars of Wellness.

What can physiotherapy treatment do for TMJ patients?
Incorporating physiotherapy into your TMJ treatment can help with:

Overall pain relief, including decreased tenderness

Increased mobility of the jaw

Ease when chewing and swallowing

Reduced jaw clenching and teeth grinding
What symptoms can physiotherapy for TMJ help treat?
If you have any of the following symptoms, it may be due to a TMJ disorder. Physiotherapy can help rehabilitate all of these symptoms, which include:
- 5Difficulty chewing and swallowing due to soreness in the jaw
- 5Pain in your ear, or in the vestibular region
- 5Pain in either side of your face
- 5Difficulty moving the jaw, even while speaking
- 5Jaw feels “locked”, making it hard to open or close the mouth
- 5Tenderness and ache in your facial region
Oftentimes, one of the more physical signs of TMJ disorder is a clicking sound. This sound occurs every time the mouth is opened or closed. It can also cause an uncomfortable grinding sensation on the side of your face and around your temples with movement, or while you chew. People who have jaw pain also have the tendency to clench their jaw or grind their teeth. If you have around three of these symptoms it is quite likely that you may be suffering from TMJ disorder.
